What is Ultrafast/Gigabit Broadband?
Ultrafast/Gigabit fibre broadband is capable of speeds over 1000Mbps and is the fastest broadband currently available. It is when fibre connections run to the premises and so do not use any copper network.
Types of Broadband Connections
ADSL Connection (Standard)
- Up to 24Mbps download
- Upload Speeds of up to 1Mbps
- Capable of: web surfing, email, social networking, moderate video for 2 devices
Superfast Broadband
This broadband is also known as fibre broadband (using fibre optic cables to the cabinet but uses copper cable to connect from the cabinet on the pavement to the house) and so can be called Fibre to the cabinet (FTTC).
- 30-300Mbps download speed (depending on distance from cabinet)
- Upload Speeds of up to 20Mbps
- Capable of: the above but video will stream in HD and sometimes in 4k and online multiplayer games can start to be played reliably. Three to five devices can use the connection.
Ultrafast Broadband
This broadband is also known as “full fibre” or Fibre to the premise (FTTP).
- 300-900Mbps Download Speed
- Upload Speeds of 100+Mbps
- Capable of: All of the above but improved video in 4K, computer game image quality, no buffering, most reliable connection. Fast upload and download for using cloud storage and moving large amounts of data. For 5+ devices.
Gigabit Broadband
This broadband is also known as “full fibre” or Fibre to the premise (FTTP).
- At least 1000Mbps / 1 Gbps Download Speed
- Upload Speeds of 100Mbps to 1Gbps
- Capable of: Highest quality streaming, gaming with no lag for multiple devices. Most reliable connection. Fastest upload speeds for moving large amounts of data. For 10+ devices.
- In the future gigabit connections will be capable of even faster speeds as it is currently limited by hardware on the network.
