DWP Launches Social Tariff Support Service

The cost of living crisis is affecting all of us, but it is especially tough for people on low income. We wrote about broadband providers launching discounted social tariff deals in our news pieces, New 'social' broadband tariff launched and Social Tariffs for Broadband articles. To support the initiative further, the Department for Work and Pensions is launching a new service at the end of August 2022, to allow internet service providers to verify, with customers’ permission, whether they are in receipt of a relevant benefit and therefore eligible for extra financial support. This service will make it easier for companies to ensure eligibility of applicants for cheaper deals, contributing to the reduction of households’ outgoings.
Our team is currently developing a pilot to raise awareness of the availability of social tariff for eligible households and increase the take up of discounted these deals for Kent residents. If you or anyone you know are struggling with broadband bills, reach out to your provider and ask about social tariffs, and watch this space to see what support Kent County Council and Digital Kent can offer.
