Digital Kent launches it's Device Recycling scheme!

What is the Device Recycling Scheme?

Digital Kent launched it’s Device Recycling Scheme, on the 28th of July 2023. The scheme aims to provide a safe, secure, and easy to use IT recycling service for residents, businesses, charities, and other organisations to dispose of their unwanted IT equipment and assets in a way that minimises the impact on the environment.

Unwanted and discarded devices contribute to the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) category and is part of the fastest growing type of waste in the UK today.

Our Device Recycling Scheme aims to refurbish and reuse, wherever possible, to directly support those in our community who need access to devices and hardware.

Sustainability and Data wiping

A large focus when designing the scheme was to ensure that all processes are sustainable and provides as much safety to user’s data as possible. All collections are carried out using satellite-tracked vehicles, driven by Security Cleared (SC) drivers, so the discarded devices are safe and secure from the moment someone disposes of them with us. The chosen courier is also fully carbon neutral, as is our recycling provider.

Once the devices reach our partner’s secure plant, they go through a specialist data-wiping process, in line with the strictest UK legislative standards. When this is successfully completed, the device will then be refurbished and reused. If the device cannot be reused or refurbished, it will be recycled down a 15-stage recycling journey, with nothing going to landfill.

If for any reason the device fails to be 100% wiped, the storage media will be destroyed and immediately shredded onsite, before being recycled in line with the WEEE directive, current UK legislation and our zero-landfill policy.

How do the donations make an impact on Kent residents?

We attempt to refurbish & reuse as many donated devices as possible to support those in our community to become better digitally included. A donation of a device will help us continue to deliver our many digital inclusion projects across Kent. Choosing to recycle your IT devices will also help tackle WEE waste in Kent and ensure we are doing our best to make Kent a more sustainable place.

The On-Going success of the Device Recycling Scheme

The Device Recycling Scheme has started off strongly with a healthy amount of donations and lots of great feedback from our users. We have already received and recycled almost 500 items through the scheme to date and hope to keep growing so we can keep supporting Kent.
